Family Traditions - win a tote... - Now closed

Congratulations to our winner - Vintage Mum - drawn via random.org

Every year for as long as I can remember my grandmother made what we called 'Molly's Balls'. A yummy Christmas treat which she must have spent months making as we each got a filled tin and last count I think she must have made at the least 20 tins for grandchildren and her daughters (not sure if the spouses got their own tins which would really have hiked up the number).
When Molly passed away I decided I would carry on the tradition in my own family, the only problem being, I had never learned the art from Molly herself and trust me as a non baker - it is an art.
After many failed years I finally realized I was reading the recipe incorrectly (dah) and last year made the perfect Molly's Balls!
I am now determined that my own kids will learn the skill and pass it on to their kids and my grandmothers memory will live on. Especially as my son says he is having 10 kids so that they can have heaps of Molly's balls!

Leave me a comment about your own family traditions and I will put you into the draw to win a BabyBaby Tote bag.

Molly's Balls Recipe NZ/US

1/4 pound of butter/ 1 stick of butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence
1 1/2 - 2 cups finely crushed vanilla wines/honey graham crackers
3 teaspoons of cocoa
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 tin of condensed milk
24 marshmallows cut in half/in the US I buy Kraft holiday marshmallows and use them whole.
A bowl of dessicated coconut/organic coconut (the organic is finer than regular which will work too).

Melt the butter and mix with the vanilla, cocoa, sugar, condensed milk.
with damp fingers roll a teaspoon of mixture around a marshmallow and form into a ball.
Roll ball in coconut (finely crushed nuts also works well).
Set on a tray lined with greaseproof paper/parchment or wax paper
Once all balls are made refrigerate.

NOTE: If mix gets too dry during process place bowl in sink filled with hot water.
You can freeze the balls for later consumption.
I double the mix - needed in our family!

How to clean your make up brushes and sponges...

The jury is out in regards to how often you should clean your make up brushes and sponges: Every week is not too often and never is not often enough. Considering the hundreds of bad bacteria that live on our skin I am going for the weekly cleanse!

Here's how:

Rinse under warm water.
Apply cleanser to the palm of your hand.
Swirl brush in the palm of your hand with the cleanser.
You can apply the cleanser directly to the sponge and massage in.
Rinse under warm running tap.
Repeat until the rinse water runs clear.
Roll brush handle between the palm of your hands to remove excess water.
Squeeze sponge to remove excess water.
Allow to air dry overnight.

If your sponge is split - its time to get a new one.

If you suffer from breakouts and active acne I would have a spare set of sponges and brushes and wash daily.

If you have an eye infection or skin infection replace your brushes and sponges once the infection has cleared.

Claire Greenwood, make up artist, NZ, uses isopropyl alcohol to sanitize brushes between clients, this can also be used at home.

Santa Santa Baby Baby

Stuff your baby's stocking this Christmas with products from BabyBaby.

Why?

You will love the natural scent of pure essential oils and manuka honey - working together to create products that are soothing and calming for bubs.

Bubs will love the bright packaging which will also keep him entertained during diaper changes and bathing.

You will love that BabyBaby products actually do what they say they will. If it says it will heal baby's rash then it will!

Bubs will love that BabyBaby products are not harmful to her skin and will make her booboos feel better.

You will love the versatility - every product has more than one use. For example: the nappy rash cream can be used on any rash but can also be applied to an insect bite or sunburn or dry skin patch. Body Lotion will hydrate bubs skin but can also double as a nappy area cleaner to prevent diaper rash.

100% money back guarantee - you will both love that if you don't like the product you can have your money back.

My suggestions for stocking stuffers:

0-6 months: Nappy Rash Cream, Moisturizing Body Lotion, Soothing Body powder, Organic Shampoo

6-12 months: Sunscreen, Organic Calming Body Wash, Cradle Cap Shampoo, Natural Conditioner.

12+ Months: Organic Shampoo, Organic Calming Body Wash, Moisturizing Body Lotion, Sunscreen Honey Sticks

Of course you can use babybaby on any age child - these are merely suggestions.

Myths - from the Sun Screen Queen!

Myth: The Higher the SPF the better the protection.

Ultra-high SPF claims are mostly marketing gimmicks. In 2007 the FDA wrote that higher values were “inherently misleading,” given that “there is no assurance that the specific values themselves are in fact truthful…” (FDA 2007).

Scientists are also worried that high-SPF products may tempt people to stay in the sun too long, suppressing sunburns (a late, key warning of overexposure) while upping the risks of other kinds of skin damage.

Myth: SPF 30 provides double the protection of an SPF 15

A sunscreen with an SPF of 15 provides protection against 95% of UVB rays, while one with an SPF of 30 provides 97% protection. However an SPF 30 contains far more chemicals than a 15 which may cause irritation and harm to sensitive skin.

Myth: A tan is healthy

There is no such thing as a 'healthy tan'. A tan is a scar and raises the risk of melanoma regardless of how deeply pigmented your skin.

Myth: A base tan will prevent me from getting permanent sun damage.

A base tan is not a substitute for sunscreen. In fact if you have achieved your 'base tan' by using a tanning bed you may have increased your risk of skin cancer. Children especially do not need a tan or a base tan!

Cradle Cap be Dash

There is something about the soft hair of a new baby but nothing nice about unsightly cradle cap. Although not generally a threat most parents want to rid their little one of their dry scalp. Here are a few facts about cradle cap and how to make cradle cap be dash.

What is Cradle Cap?

Cradle cap is a form of seborrhoea dermatitis (sebum causing inflammation on the skin). This minor form of inflammatory disease can be found on the scalp, face and occasionally other areas of the body.

Cradle cap appears as thick, oily yellowish or brownish patches on the skin, particularly on the scalp. It can also be found around the eyebrows, nose and ears and sometimes in the genital area. The skin itself appears to be red, flaky and irritated underneath the oily patches. It most often affects children who are between two weeks and two years of age.
Although cradle cap may be unsightly it is not harmful to the child.

Causes
During infancy and early childhood, the glands that produce sweat and oil are in a highly reactive state. Cradle cap is simply a build up of sweat and oil produced by these overactive glands. The build up may cause the skin to become irritated. Sometimes an overgrowth of yeast may contribute to the condition.
Occasionally, cradle cap is a symptom of a more serious problem so it symptoms persist it is advised to consult your doctor.

Treatment
Brush the scalp with a soft bristle brush to loosen the scales.
Follow with Cradle Cap Shampoo, can use daily.
Cradle Cap Shampoo will treat mild conditions of cradle cap by gently cleansing away excess oil from the scalp.
Occasionally, there may be an exception to this rule as seborrhoea reactions may also be due to lack of sebum. If the baby suffers cradle cap as a result of shampooing this may be the case.
The chamomile and lavender oils in Cradle Cap Shampoo will also contribute to regulating the sebum production in the scalp.

Persistant Cradle Cap
For persistant Cradle Cap you can massage 2B Multi-Healing Balm into the scalp prior to shampooing. The balm will gently lift the scales from the scalp for easy

Kiwi Mummy Blogs

I was really excited to get a review of BabyBaby Organic Calming Body Wash by seasoned kiwi mum blogger BobbyRobin AKA Sarah from Kiwi Mummy Blogs. For one we got a great review (see below) and two I love learning about other mums who seem to seamlessly juggle it all.

Sarah is a mum, a blogger who also runs KMB and (in her words) "in my spare time blogs for NZGirl". According to Sarah in an interview with one of our other favorite mummy bloggers Lil Magoolie "It would be disastrous if I was juggling knives, let me tell you"! But somehow she is managing it all. Check out KMB and see for yourself Sarah and other kiwi mummy bloggers.

Review

We've tried the BabyBaby Organic Calming Body Wash recently and loved it. Actually, I think I love it more than Zoe as I've been using it as a body wash myself - it does say for Mama or Baby!! I just love anything natural for my skin (and Zoe's) and I'm a sucker for that natural lavender/herby smell in products. It just makes me feel like cuddling up and sleeping, so I guess that's the 'calming' part of this body wash's job done!

It bubbles up in the bath, it did get a bit slippery for Zoe though so we use it after the bath is filled as a wash rather than an 'in-bath' soap. It was nice and easy to use.

Southern Hemisphere Sun Fest

It is really hard writing about sun protection when Jack Frost has been at my house the last few mornings and we are expecting snow any day but as a majority of our customers are in NZ and Australia I really wanted to share this great find. The bonus being they are great for those of us who are heading into winter too.

Eco Peko Bamboodie

From the Eco Peko website:

The Ultimate Sun Shirt...

Bamboodie is a long sleeved, hooded top that has an extra long body for ultimate coverage. Its made from bamboo is light and silky soft.

Bamboodie’s are naturally anti-bacterial & hypoallergenic, U.V reflective and have superior breathability. This makes the top, cool in summer and warm in winter. So not only will it be great for baby at the beach (dries super quick!), but in winter, can be the first layer on to keep a constant temperature.

I think they are just out right cute! Team one up with some BabyBaby Sunscreen and your little one can enjoy the weather without forever effects of permanent sun damage.

A few tips from the Sun Screen Queen

I am the self professed Sun Screen Queen - ask my kids and they will say I am more the Sun Screen Nazi but either way my goal over the summer is to have the least possible sun damage done to my kids skin as possible.

With the weather warming up in the Southern Hemisphere I wanted to share a few tips which I have put in to practice over the years.

Kids will wear sunscreen! As long as it has the feel good factor. Sticky, stinky, oily creams and sprays will just turn them off. Choose wisely - a sunscreen that feels good, absorbs quickly and smells decent. My six year old loves the smell of the manuka honey in the babybaby sunscreen and tells me every time I apply it " This smells good".

Let your kids have a go at applying their own sunscreen then apply to the spots they missed after wards. You need to apply 20 minutes before going out anyway so be patient and let them be responsible for their own protection. Obviously you will be the judge as to what is age appropriate, but even little ones like to rub the cream onto their arms and this can distract them while you get the rest of their body.

Don't wait until you get to the pool or beach to apply sunscreen - two reasons.
(1) No one likes sand sticking to the sunscreen and kids don't generally want to wait until their skin dries before hitting the water. (2) Most importantly sunscreen needs about 20 minutes to activate and absorb so slather up at home and let the sunscreen do its work while you are traveling.

Sunscreen needs to be reapplied so time your picnic, snack or ice cream break according to when the kids need to boost their protection (and apply before you eat so the sunscreen has time to activate).

Put a tube of sunscreen in the kids lunch boxes and explain how dangerous sun burn can be and that the most risky part of the day is when they are out for lunch. Explain that sunscreen will give them super powers to defend off sun burn.

Keep a tube of sunscreen in your hand bag so that you always have some on hand - don't keep it in the car as it gets too hot and the ingredients can separate.

Not just for bums!

From one of our customers - I think we have all been here!

Just thought you might like to know about this one. Had one of
those days on Saturday where it starts out horrible weather-wise, but
turned into a brilliant sunny day. I was out with the kids and not very
well prepared and, well, the short story is Miss 3 months old got sun burnt
on one side of her face and head.

I felt like a terrible mother (still do) and it was bad enough that I really needed to put something on it, although there's not much you can put on a bubba that little. I thought of the multi healing balm which has helped sunburn on me in the past (honest, it's not a regular occurrence!)but thought I'd be safer with the nappy rash cream because of the smaller amounts of essential oils in it.

So I tested it overnight by slathering some of the nappy rash cream up the side of her face and on her forehead (the worst affected parts). Well in the morning I wished I'd just bitten the bullet and put it everywhere because where I'd put the cream was looking really good but on her cheek (where I hadn't put any) was looking worse! Needless to say I liberally applied more nappy rash cream to the rest of her sunburn - and it's much better today.

Anyway, we now have sunhats for both children and two tubes of Baby Baby sunscreen in the nappy bag, so it won't happen again, but I wanted to thank you and thought you might like to add 'heals sunburn faster' to the list of things your wonderful nappy rash cream can do.

We do recommend you use the nappy rash cream on infants under one year old or with sensitive skin in place of the multi healing balm for the exact reason mentioned above - less essential oils. What brilliant customers we have!

What was said...

Recently BabyBaby were recipients of the PTPA Media Awards for our Organic Baby Body Wash.

Here is what one independent reviewer had to say (the number is the score they gave us):

Q: Did you like the scent of this product?

5/5

It was a really nice scent, and I really liked that it was not at all strong, nice and light.

Q: Did it cause any irritations to you or your baby's skin?

5/5

No, and my son has excema and so lots of other products do irritate his skin.

Q: Do you think this product is a good body wash alternative for babies with
sensitive skin?

5/5

Definitely as my son has excema and this did not bother his sensitive skin at all!

Q: Do you think this product is priced fairly?

4/5

I do believe that it is a fair price for what it is although I wish you
could get this great of a product at a lower price. It is a very
competitive price though!

Q: Will you continue to use this product?

5/5

yes!!!

Q: As a parent, do you have any concerns with this product?

5/5

No none at all!

Q: Would you recommend this product to friends or family?

5/5

Definitely, especially to families who are concerned about additional chemicals and those with sensitivities in their families!

Q: Did this body wash meet your expectations?

5/5

It most definitely met my expectations!

Q: What did you like best about this product?

5/5

I liked the look of the bottle, nice and simple, not bright and splashy, a
good, size. I loved of course that it didn't react with my sons
sensitive skin and that there are no harmful chemicals in it!

Q: What did you least like about this product?

I would just add a pump and wouldn't change another thing!!

44/45 - not bad!

The birthday

Most days for the past month or more my little guy has been asking "Is it my birthday today"?
He knows it is coming but it is not until August 10.
Today a parcel arrived for him from his cousins who happen to be the kids of Kim from Sticky Tiki. I could not wait to open it up and I had in the mind the perfect spot for the newest addition to Sticky Tiki range. However, my little boy who so patiently accepts my replies that his birthday is not today told me "I won't open my present until my birthday".
I don't know if mummy can wait that long!

How Does World Breast Feeding Week Make You Feel?

When I first started out in the baby business I approached a large, well known organisation about advertising with them. They had a connection with my target market -mums. The organisation were happy for me to advertise but first they wanted to look over my product list to make sure we did not sell anything which promoted formula feeding.
We did not sell anything associated with formula or bottles or anything of such which was black listed; not because we were anti formula feeding it was because we are predominately a skin care company.
After much thought I decided that perhaps our values did not match and perhaps my advertising dollar was better spent else where. As a mother who had been unable to breastfeed two out of four children I certainly did not want to discriminate against those like myself and our breast feeding pillows have saved the arms of many women who have bottle fed and found this a useful tool to have.
So here we are in the middle of World Breast Feeding week and its all talk about boobs and breast milk, rights to breast feed where and when you like, nationally and internationally organised events and plenty of media attention which has left me wondering - how does this make those who can not or chose not to breast feed feel?

Behind the Scenes - Feeding Pillow

No one at BabyBaby is exempt from homework. This week it was my turn to pre-wash and iron our Decor' Friendly feeding pillow fabric.

I have to tell you I don't mind doing the washing, I have four kids, clothes washing is a part of life. I do, however, detest ironing and avoid it at all costs. So here I find myself having to iron metres and metres of fabric - oh the boredom.

So why do we pre-wash and iron the feeding pillow fabric?

Prevention: We don't want any dye running the first time you wash your brand new feeding pillow so we make sure there is no run off before production.

Shrinkage: We use natural fabrics so there is more chance of shrinkage.

Shape: Different fabric qualities and weights shrink differently. As there is alot of shape in the pillows especially around the zips, then they could end up quite puckered looking and out of shape if we did not pre- shrink the fabric. Again we would not like this to happen to your brand new pillow.

I guess to sum up - we go through this process for you - so that your feeding pillow is in perfect condition when it reaches you. It is clean and ready to use and there is no chance of shrinkage or product distortion when you wash it.

NOTE: We do not use laundry powder, fabric softener or anything that will cause skin reactions for your babies sensitive skin.

The Best and Worst Places To Be a Mother

Mothers in Norway and Australia are living in the best places in the world, according to Save the Children's 11th annual "Mothers' Index", which ranks the best and worst places to be a mother.

Afghanistan ranked at the bottom of the list of 160 countries, which included 43 developed nations and 117 in the developing world.

Great news for Aussie and Kiwi mums who are among the top 10 best places to be a mother: Norway ranks first, followed by Australia, Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, New Zealand, Finland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. The United States places at 28.

The Index is based on an analysis of indicators of women's and children's health and well-being, and clearly illustrates that providing mothers with access to education, economic opportunities and maternal and child health care gives mothers and their children the best chance to survive and thrive.

Seems its looking pretty good to come from the land down under.

YOU ARE A GREAT MUM!

Being a mum is hard work. We all want to do our best.

Often we’re too busy looking at other mothers we think are doing a great job that we don’t see them looking back at us thinking the same thing. Breastmates would like to bridge this communication gap by launching a free certificate to download and share.

“Something as simple as encouragement about how well your child is doing can mean the world of difference to a mum,” says Breastmates founder Frances McInnes, mum to two boys, as well as being a small business owner.

“I know myself, if someone just comments on what I am doing as a mum, it really makes me feel encouraged. This year my goal is to help mothers feel encouraged and confident in their parenting ability, and in the choices they make.”

If someone passes you one of these certificates, then you’ll know that your mum skills are noticed. By sending one to a mother you know, you will be making a real difference on a day that may otherwise have been quite a challenge!

You can download this certificate from the following link, save to your computer, and then email to your friends along with your own message of encouragement. Download a PDF certificate

NZ Made Feeding Pillow

New Decor Friendly Feeding Pillow

The BabyBaby Feeding Pillow has been a favorite among mums since its inception eight years ago. Its unique 'U' shape ensures this feeding pillow moulds to baby and you, easily, comfortably and correctly. The larger than most surface size means you can use it to feed your infant longer than smaller feeding supports allow.

Filled with polystyrene beans which are incased in there own inner means you control the height and comfort of the pillow depending on your needs and that of your child.

It comes in a machine washable, pre-shrunk 100% patterned cotton top with black cotton base, chosen to fit with your living room furnishings.

* Great for breast feeding and establishing correct feeding position for mother and baby.
* Supports mothers back during feeding preventing future back problems.
* Due to correct feeding position for baby, helps prevent feeding associated problems.
* A 'Must Have' for Breast feeding twins simultaneously.
* Supports the back of support people holding baby - great for partners and children.
* Supports baby while she is learning to sit.
* Back support for bed ridden adults.
* Machine washable and dries in no time.
* 100% Money Back Guarantee.
